Are the Abraham Accords in jeopardy?

10.11.2020

In a recently published Facebook post, former Israeli Communications Minister Ayoob Kara proclaimed, “In contrast to those who wish to celebrate Biden’s victory, I wish to thank President Trump for his unwavering support of Israel and especially for the recent peace agreements, the relocation of the US Embassy to Jerusalem, his support for Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, his support for Israel annexing up to 30% of Judea and Samaria, his cancellation of the Iranian nuclear deal and more.  It seems that one day we will shed tears over the fact that over 75% of American Jews elected Biden and prevented Trump from having a second term.”

Kara recently returned from the United Arab Emirates.  He claimed that in the Persian Gulf, the people there were also disappointed that Biden won the US elections: “They say since Trump lost, we find ourselves in a situation where the focus will return towards the Palestinian Authority.   This is something that the Persian Gulf states hate.  We need peace more than a two-state solution.   What happened in the United States is bad news.   We must finish and fulfill the Abraham Accords.”

Kara’s worst fear is that Biden will seek to undo Trump’s plan that is leading to an increasing number of Arab and Muslim countries recognizing Israel merely because of their disdain for the current US President, even though it has been proven that his plan works: “This situation is bad for Israel.   Thus, the election of Biden will supply oxygen to the regime of the mullah’s in Iran.”    Nevertheless, from Kara’s point of view, a Biden presidency is mostly problematic because of the policies towards the Middle East that are advanced by the Democratic Party.

In Kara’s opinion, the support that Obama-Biden gave towards the Arab Spring and that Bill Clinton gave towards the Oslo Accords was a strategic mistake.  He noted that the Arab Spring led to the Muslim Brotherhood rising to power in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt, while the Oslo Accords led to “buses exploding in Israel.”   He accused the Democratic Party’s policy of bringing “extremism to the region” and stressed that seeking to spread democracy in the Middle East is nothing more than misguided Western thinking.

“The Islamists use religion,” Kara stressed.  “It’s powerful.  No one can stop it.”  He added that if even in the State of Israel, religious Jewish people tend to vote for the Haredi parties blindly, it is folly to think that it will be any different in the Arab and Muslim countries: “The religious elect their own parties.  It is the decision of the religious leadership.   Therefore, there is no way that you can have a democratic state in the Middle East.  If you don’t have Mubarak, you get the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Interestingly, the democratization of the Moroccan Parliament has led to Islamists taking over the parliament there, while steps that Turkey took towards democratization to join the EU led to the Islamist AKP taking over there.   And Morocco and Turkey are among the better examples.  Other countries, such as Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya, are reeling from the bloodshed caused by Islamist power struggles following the Arab Spring.

“ISIS, the Muslim Brotherhood, etc. do not value human life,” Kara emphasized.  “According to the Green Prince, Hamas killed people who don’t agree with them every night and then they say the Israelis did it.  This is what happens in the Middle East when Islamists take over.  But at least in secular countries, you got the right to live and work, so long as you do not speak out against the regime.  Secular dictatorships are the best you can hope for.”  For this reason, he believes that Obama-Biden demonstrated that they were novices and thus were not “professional” when it came to formulating a sound Middle East policy.

In other news, Kara believes that this peace agreement with Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates will be different from the peace agreements Israel has with Egypt and Jordan: “It is between the citizens.  This is not something that happened in the past.”  He noted that in the Persian Gulf, the Jewish people are now referred to as “sons of Abraham” and that we now have mutual enemies.  Despite Biden’s election, Kara thinks that the peace agreements with both countries will hold, for Biden seeks to go back to the disastrous nuclear deal with Iran and “we have to stand together to stop Iran.”
