Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview with I24 News confirmed that searches are presently underway for the remains of the late Israeli spy Eli Cohen in Syria. The report also stated that an item that belonged to the late spy has been found, was transferred into Israeli hands by Russia and is in the process of being confirmed for authenticity.

In a recent Facebook post, MK Ayoob Kara proclaimed: “I congratulate the Prime Minister on the efforts made to return the body of the late Eli Cohen from Syria. I am aware of the great difficulty in this, but there is no doubt that the strengthening of the relationship between Netanyahu and Putin is the key to solving many of the issues related to Israelis that went missing or are held captive.”

Eli Cohen was one of the greatest spies in Israeli history. In the 1960’s, he managed to develop close political connections with the Syrian elite and even became chief advisor to the Minister of Defense. However, he was ultimately caught and publicly hanged in 1965. Since then, his widow Nadia and his three children have been searching for his remains, so that they could give him a proper Jewish burial in the Land of Israel.
